Protests Boil Over in Brazil After U.S. Tariffs, Sanctions
Protesters rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Brasília and gathered at U.S. consulates in major cities like Rio de Janeiro, chanting slogans and carrying signs that read "Sovereignty is not negotiable." Demonstrators condemned what they view as U.S. efforts to exploit tariffs as a political weapon and meddle in Brazil’s judicial and sovereign affairs.
On Wednesday, the U.S. government announced it would levy tariffs of up to 50% on Brazilian exports. In addition, Washington imposed sanctions on Alexandre de Moraes, a justice on Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court who is currently presiding over a case involving former President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is accused of attempting to cling to power after his defeat in the 2022 election.
The tariff increase — one of the steepest ever enacted by the U.S. against a trading partner — follows President Trump’s claims that Brazil’s judiciary is overstepping its authority and his demand for Bolsonaro's trial to be stopped.
Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has forcefully pushed back, denouncing what he calls external interference in Brazil’s internal matters. He has criticized the opposition, especially the Bolsonaro family, for prioritizing international alliances over national sovereignty. Lula maintains that Brazil must defend its judicial independence and engage with foreign powers on equal footing.
