Trump Says Iran Deal Could Be Done Within "a Week"
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump believes a final agreement with Iran could be within reach in as little as one week, a news agency anchor Bret Baier revealed Wednesday, citing a direct phone conversation with the president.
"Well, I I had a phone call with the president, a short time ago, and he is optimistic about this deal, this memorandum of understanding, thinks it is going to lead to things.
"He's cautiously optimistic, I should say ... I asked him what the time frame would be, he puts it at a week getting everything wrapped up," Baier said during a live news broadcast.
Baier identified "the key part" of any prospective agreement as securing the removal of highly enriched uranium from Iranian soil and guaranteeing the Strait of Hormuz remains fully open to international navigation.
Trump himself had struck a similarly upbeat tone earlier Wednesday, offering brief but pointed remarks on the state of negotiations. "We're doing very well in Iran. It's going very smoothly, and we'll see what happens. They want to make a deal, they want to negotiate," Trump said at the White House.
The diplomatic activity unfolds against a volatile regional backdrop. US and Israeli strikes against Iran on Feb. 28 ignited a cycle of retaliation, with Tehran striking back against Israel and US allies across the Gulf, while simultaneously shuttering the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took hold on April 8, though subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to yield a durable settlement. Trump later extended the truce without attaching a fixed deadline.
Since April 13, Washington has maintained a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strait. On Tuesday, Trump announced a temporary pause to "Project Freedom" — the US military operation aimed at restoring commercial shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz — while firmly stating that the American blockade would remain "in full force and effect."
