Trump Signs Order to Slap Tariffs on Iran Trading Partners

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday granting authorization to levy tariffs against nations conducting trade with Iran, though he refrained from immediately activating the economic penalties.

The directive emerged on the same day Washington engaged with Tehran for nuclear negotiations—the first such diplomatic encounter in over six months. While the order does not establish a definitive tariff percentage, it references 25% as an "example" rate.

Trump's order said the duty "may be imposed on goods imported into the United States that are products of any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran."

The executive action delegates responsibility to the secretaries of state and commerce for identifying "whether, after the effective date of this order, a foreign country directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran."

"After the Secretary of Commerce finds that a foreign country directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran, the Secretary of Commerce shall inform the Secretary of State of his finding, including any information relevant to that finding," it adds.

Trump initially previewed these secondary sanctions last month via social media during widespread mass protests across Iran, where authorities faced international condemnation for alleged severe human rights violations deployed to suppress demonstrators.

The order becomes effective early Saturday morning.
